Obituary of Neil James O'Brien

O'Brien, Neil James of Hamburg, New York passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 2, 2021 at the age of 95. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard E. and Eugenie (nee Lavieille) O'Brien; his brother, Roger O'Brien and sisters, Charlotte Duffey, Winifred Platt and grandson Edward Foley. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Jane Marie (nee Bruckman) O'Brien; his sisters, Mary Lou O'Brien, Eugenie Leary and Ceceilia Strzempka; his sons, Michael (Christine), Patrick (Norine) and Howard (Lisa) O'Brien; his daughters Christine O'Brien, Deborah (David) Bellissimo and Laurie (Jeri) O'Brien; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, 66 East Main Street, Hamburg on Saturday, September 25 at 10:30 AM. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, Hamburg. Neil was born on May 18, 1925 in Buffalo, NY. As a teen he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout which he was very proud of. He was a graduate of McKinley High School in Buffalo. He went to work shortly thereafter as a union plumber for Local 36 until he retired at the age of 62. He was an avid golfer and member of South Shore Country Club and later Springville Country Club for many years. He brought the joy of golf to his entire family. He was a devoted Catholic as a member of St. Agatha Church in Buffalo and later SS. Peter & Paul Church in Hamburg. He also loved hunting, reading books about historical events and sportsmen including boxers and baseball players. The family is grateful to the aides from HCR in Rochester, NY and the staff at the Legacy in Brighton, NY for the loving care. Special thanks to James Brien Walterich and Joseph O'Brien for providing loving help over the years. Services will be held at a later time. Interment is private.
