Obituary of Phyllis E. Vacanti

Vacanti, Phyllis E. (nee Ahles), of Newport, NC and a native of Buffalo, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Crystal Coast Hospice in Newport. Wife of the late Frank A. Vacanti; mother of Mark and Gary (Debbie) Vacanti and Lisa (Raymond) Weisenburg and the late Michael Vacanti; grandmother of George Fischer, Amy (Andy) Hess, William (Kimberly) Fischer, RaeAnne (Brian) Thom and Jennifer "Renee" (John) Atcheson; sister of the late Della Rinaldi, Richard Ahles, Elaine Underhill and Georgia Ahles; also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Linda Ahles and numerous nieces and nephews. Phyllis was a member of the Catholic Church as well as Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS and VFW Auxiliary. She voluntereed for many years with local hospitals and the American Red Cross. She loved watching hockey and baseball and was an avid reader and lover of books. She was known as a very crafty person who enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, doll making, pottery, wood carving and millinery. She also enjoyed baking and cake decorating for family weddings and special events. Above all else, she loved being a wife, a mom, a grandma and a great-grandma and was devoted to those roles. Family and friends called at the DONALD M. DEMMERLEY FUNERAL HOME, 21 Pierce Avenue, Hamburg on Wednesday, October 7 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, 66 East Main Street, Hamburg on Thursday, October 8 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Alzheimer's Association.
