Of Boston, NY passed away on February 15, 2024. Beloved husband of Nancy (nee Wetzler) Bernas; devoted father of Mark Bernas, Kristen “Kiki” (Justin) Weigel, Kerri (Joshua) Paufler; cherished grandfather of Gwendolynn and Noah Paufler, Henry, Leo and Carmen Weigel, Erica, Charlize, Avery and Gabriel Harding; dear brother of the late Cathy (late Donald) Woodworth, the late Donna (late Leon) Rousseau, Terri, Thomas (Susie), Daniel (Mary) and John (Tammy) Bernas; loving uncle of Roxceene (Harold) Leanos, and many other nieces and nephews; step-father of Peter and Charles (Marilyn) Harding; best friend for 60 years of  the late Angus “Rod” McNeil; loving son of the late Thomas and Laura Bernas. David graduated from Frontier High School in 1967. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, where he was the recipient of many commendations. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Rifle Marksman Badge and the Combat Action Ribbon for direct combat in Vietnam. David owned and operated Batteries Express in Boston, NY for many years, retiring in 2010. He was a life member and past Chief of the North Boston Volunteer Fire Co, belonged to the Hamburg Kingsmen Drum and Bugle Corps and the Hamburg “K” Drum Corps. David will be dearly missed by family and friends. Friends may call at the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home, 21 Pierce Ave. Hamburg, NY on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 11 AM. A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date. Memorial contributions in David’s memory may be made to the North Boston Volunteer Fire Co.
