Obituary of Barbara M Shaughnessy

Shaughnessy, Barbara M, “Nana” (nee Vaeth), age 89 of Hamburg, NY, peacefully went home to the Lord, surrounded by her loving family on January 26, 2022.  Born February 12, 1932, in Rochester, NY to Joseph E. (late) and Margaret Casey (late) Vaeth.  Beloved wife of the late Deacon Frank J. Shaughnessy.  Cherished mother of Marie Therese (David) Kersten, Martin (Judy), Bernard (Linda), Mary Rose (Mike) Cook, Margaret Mary, Maria (Andrew) Walker, Jean Marie (Timothy) Lipinski, and Peter (Anabela). Adored “Nana” of Alexandria (Christopher), Margaret Anne, Martin, James, Sarah, Theresa (Alejandro), Sean, Emma, Patrick, Matthew (Alek), Julianna, Hannah, Mary Catherine, Bridget, John, Andrew, Grace, Luke, Emilia, Mara, Joseph, Dominic, and Clare.  Loving great-grandmother to Maeve, Noah, and Maximilian. Devoted sister to late Joseph (late Monica) Vaeth, late Richard (late Mickey) Vaeth, Patricia (late Don) Scheg, Marie (Art) Leo, James (Judy) Vaeth, late Jack (Peggy) Vaeth, late Thomas (Glenda) Vaeth, Kathleen Vaeth, and late Margaret Ann Vaeth. Survived also by many nieces & nephews. Barbara graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester in 1950, attended Nazareth College and Rosary Hill College (now Daemen college) and graduated with a degree in teaching.  She shared her gift of teaching Religion and English at Bishop McMahon High school in Buffalo and St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster. She received the “Bishop Edward D. Head Outstanding Teacher” award from the Diocese of Buffalo, the National Honor Society Teacher of the Year award, and, together with her husband, received the Pro-Vita Award from the Office of Pro Life Activities through the Diocese of Buffalo. She also taught a formation class to the Permanent Deacons’ Wives at the Christ the King Seminary, in East Aurora.  Barbara was a devout Catholic and led a life of service and selflessness. She was very active in her parish ministries at SS Peter & Paul (Eucharistic Adoration, Elizabeth Ministry, Pro Life Ministry, Charismatic Prayer Group) as well as many outside ministries (Pro Life Ministry, Phoebe Ministry, Sacred Heart Enthronement, various music ministries with her husband). Her family and friends adored her and she will be remembered for her strong faith, extreme generosity, her holiday masks and wigs, her kindness, her sense of humor and her love of eating out!  Visitation at DONALD M. DEMMERLEY FUNERAL HOME, 21 Pierce Avenue, Hamburg on Saturday, January 29 from 4-7 PM and Sunday, January 30 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, 66 East Main Street, Hamburg on Monday, January 31 at 10:30 AM. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, NY.
